Functional and Neural Mechanisms for Eye Gaze Processing.Kevin Pelphrey & Brent C. Vander Wyk - 2011 - In Andy Calder, Gillian Rhodes, Mark Johnson & Jim Haxby (eds.), Oxford Handbook of Face Perception. Oxford University Press.
The capacity to extract socially relevant information from faces is fundamental to normal reciprocal social interactions and communication. The psychophysical evidence reviewed here demonstrates that humans possess a perceptual apparatus sensitive enough to detect the visual features which are informative of gaze in many face-to-face situations. This article provides evidence for the existence of three functionally and neuroanatomically dissociable eye gaze processing systems. Eye gaze also represents a class of biological motion cues, which engage the posterior superior temporal sulcus for (...)

    Peirce's Triadic Logic: Modality and Continuity.Brent C. Odland - 2021 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 57 (2):149-171.
In early 1909, Charles S. Peirce conducted a series of experiments with three-valued logic, anticipating the pioneering work of Jan Łukasiewicz and Emil Post by ten years. These experiments are entirely contained within six or seven pages of Peirce's Logic Notebook. Due to the work of Atwell Turquette, the formalisms contained in those pages are relatively well understood. What is less understood are Peirce's philosophical reasons for conducting those experiments. His explanation of the need for his "triadic" logic is very (...)

Queer Futurity and Afrofuturism: Enacting Emancipatory Utopias in Music Education.Brent C. Talbot & Donald M. Taylor - 2023 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 31 (1):43-58.
Inspired by the life and works of GrammyAward® winning artist, Lil Nas X, we explore ways a young Black queer musician has enacted emancipatory utopias to disrupt dominant cultural modes of being—offering unapologetic expressions and expansions of race, gender, and sexual identity. In this paper, we draw upon José Esteban Muñoz and Ytasha Womak to consider how utopian thinking through the lenses of queer futurity and Afrofuturism provides a way to dismantle the hegemonic and proleptic trappings of music education and (...)

The Applicability of the Planck Length to Zeno, Kalam, and Creation Ex Nihilo.Brent C. Lyons - 2017 - Philosophia Christi 19 (1):171-180.
There are good reasons to think there is a universal, fundamental length, specifically, at the order of the Planck length. If this holds, we then have an empirical answer for Zeno’s paradox of Achilles and the tortoise, a potential impasse in the second premise of the kalam cosmological argument, and creation ex nihilo. In this paper, I establish metaphysical, empirical, and epistemic reasons suggesting there is a universal, fundamental length. Along the way, I propose a “contingent necessity” for such a (...)

Natural Fiction and Artifice in Hume's Treatise.Brent C. Delaney - 2021 - Dissertation, York University
David Hume's early philosophy appeals to fiction and artifice to explain several important features in our cognitive and social activity. In this dissertation, I develop a typology of Humean fictions and artifices to clarify and render his account consistent. In so doing, I identify a special class of fictions I divide into natural fictions and natural artifices. I argue that this special class of cognitive and social fictions represents a significant break with prior English-speaking philosophers, such as Francis Bacon and (...)

Creating Albert Camus: Foundations and Explorations of His Philosophy of Communication.Brent C. Sleasman (ed.) - 2015 - Fairleigh Dickinson University Press.
Creating Albert Camus: Foundations & Explorations in his Philosophy of Communication contributes to the study of the philosophy of communication by solidifying the place of Albert Camus within human communication studies. The major claim within Creating Albert Camus is that Camus serves as a philosopher of communication for the twenty-first century and can contribute to the growing conversation about the philosophy of communication in our contemporary age.

Martin Luther en Johannes Calvyn oor die Christelike vryheid.Ignatius W. C. Van Wyk - 2017 - HTS Theological Studies 73 (5):22-39.

It seems as if nothing has been written, though, on their image and understanding of God. This article is an attempt to close the gap in the research. These women’s understanding of God (...)

The Reformed Theological College has for 15 years contributed to the appreciation of this tradition. This article wants to encourage the new leadership to keep this legacy alive. The main aspects of Luther’s theology are explained. These aspects are: prayer, meditation, constitation, grace of the Spirit, exegesis, and the use of other sciences in (...)

Analytic epistemologists agree that, whatever else is true of epistemic justification, it is distinct from knowledge. However, if recent work by Jonathan Sutton is correct, this view is deeply mistaken, for according to Sutton justification is knowledge. That is, a subject is justified in believing that p iff he knows that p. Sutton further claims that there is no concept of epistemic justification distinct from knowledge. Since knowledge is factive, a consequence of Sutton’s view is that there are no false (...)

Loneliness and Longing: Conscious and Unconscious Aspects.Brent Willock, Lori C. Bohm & Rebecca Coleman Curtis (eds.) - 2011 - New York: Routledge.
We all experience loneliness at some time in our lives and it often motivates people, consciously or otherwise, to enter treatment. Yet it is rarely explicitly addressed in psychoanalytic literature. _Loneliness and Longing_ rectifies this oversight by thoroughly exploring this painful psychological state. In this book contributors address the inner sense of loneliness – that is feeling alone even in the company of others – by drawing on different aspects of loneliness and longing. Topics covered include: loneliness in the consulting (...)

The contribution that Professor Pieter M. Venter has made to the study of the Old Testament during his academic and ecclesiastic career is reviewed. After a brief biographical introduction, the article surveys the development of his research interests, focusing specifically on his contributions to the study of wisdom literature, narratives and narratology, second temple literature, the formation of the canon, and Old Testament Theology. The review concludes with reference to his way of practising critical theology, taking full cognisance of research (...)

Perhaps no name is more clearly associated with the formulation of American psychology than that of William James. Yet, one of James’s last published works, A Pluralistic Universe, is little known and rarely cited in the discipline. On the 100th anniversary of the publication of this book, the authors of this special issue of The Journal of Mind and Behavior explore the past, present, and future legacy of the provocative ideas contained in this volume for psychology, including the history of (...)

Die barmhartige God, regverdiging en goeie werke deur Luther.Ignatius W. C. Van Wyk - 2017 - HTS Theological Studies 73 (5):3-21.

The experiences of female ministers in counselling female rape survivors: A phenomenological study.Neltjie C. van Wyk - 2018 - HTS Theological Studies 74 (4):7.
Rape is an act of humiliation that leaves the survivors ashamed. They therefore often try and hide from others and rarely seek help. Informal discussions with female ministers revealed that some of them had counselled female rape survivors. A descriptive phenomenological study, aimed at exploring and describing the experiences of female ministers in counselling female rape survivors through individual interviews, was conducted. Six ministers were interviewed. They experienced the dichotomy of being a woman and being a minister during their encounter (...)
